«An educator, a theorist, an activist, and a coach ... Jeffrey M.R. Duncan-Andrade draws on all of these roles to explain what it takes to teach and motivate young people to succeed. Through this skillful analysis of the role of sports in the lives of urban youth, Duncan-Andrade reveals how educators can build relationships and develop a deeper sense of meaning about the purpose of education with the young people they serve. An inspiring, insightful analysis and an invaluable guide for those who recognize the potential for education to transform lives and empower urban youth.» (Pedro A. Noguera, Peter L. Agnew Professor of Education, Steinhardt School of Culture, Education and Development; Executive Director, Metropolitan Center for Urban Education, New York University) «Jeffrey M.R. Duncan-Andrade always presents us with a freshness ... fresh ideas, fresh analysis, fresh perspectives. It is no different in this volume. One of the freshest takes on coaching, teaching, and learning from a critical perspective.» (Gloria Ladson-Billings, Professor and Chair, Department of Curriculum and Instruction; Kellner Family Chair in Urban Education, University of Wisconsin-Madison) «This is a book for anyone who cares to chart a path for children and youth in urban schools. There is so much to recommend in this book, but above it all is the sense of optimism that sports can be a tool for empowerment for all our kids, whether or not they have pro potential.» (Dave Zirin, Author of _A People_s History of Sports in the U.S._), An educator, a theorist, an activist, and a coach ... Synopsis
Counterpoints publishes the most compelling and imaginative books being written in education today. Grounded on the theoretical advances in criticalism, feminism and postmodernism in the last two decades of the twentieth century, Counterpoints engages the meaning of these innovations in various forms of educational expression. Committed to the proposition that theoretical literature should be accessible to a variety of audiences, the series insists that its authors avoid esoteric and jargonistic languages that transform educational scholarship into an elite discourse for the initiated., This book, written by an experienced urban classroom teacher and coach, aims to document effective practices in urban schools and to provide insight into productive program building and educational practices. The book rejects the up-by-your-bootstraps theory of success, offering in its place a set of concrete strategies for teachers and educational leaders who are committed to fundamentally rethinking the business-as-usual approach which continues to fail urban school children. This book is well-suited for classes working with educational leaders, classroom teachers, sports coaches, and educational researchers.

Book was "nearly new" and "as described" in listing. The advertised price was fair and a good value. Unfortunately, the seller's shipping partner was very slow to get the book packaged and shipped. Shipping took too long, and the tracking info gave no reliable info on shipping date, time in transit or expected delivery. Seller did everything right, but their shipping partner needs improvement. I recommend this seller to other eBay buyers....... just make sure you're okay with the shipping terms.

The listing was for a hardcover version of this book; however, I received a paperback. The Seller replied quickly to my question about this issue and issued a full refund - and let me keep the book. So, a diligent Seller for sure - and well packaged and reasonable timing on shipping. Thank you for the refund, and as you suggested, I'll likely donate this volume and seek the hardcover.

Great transaction, exactly as described, packed well, and promptly shipped on August 6th. Unfortunately the U.S. Postal Service took 23 calendar days to deliver the book. It was shipped from Pennsylvania, to Atlanta, past Alabama to Texas, enjoyed several days in Texas, then to Minneapolis, Jacksonville, Florida, back to Atlanta, finally to Birmingham, and Huntsville. The seller was very responsive and I decided it was interesting to see if/how the book would arrive. Thanks, Joe
