Nel corso del '900 la semiotica si è articolata in due direzioni. Da un lato si è consolidata la tradizione strutturale, che ha le sue origini nell' opera di Ferdinand de Saussure. Secondo la prospettiva strutturale la semiotica studia i sistemi e i processi della significazione, concentrandosi sui testi. Dall'altro si è sviluppata la tradizione interpretativa, che ha le sue origini nel pragmatismo di Charles Sanders Peirce e trova la sua formulazione più compiuta nella teoria semiotica di Umberto Eco. In questo volume, Traini evidenzia i fondamenti teorici e i nodi problematici di entrambe le tradizioni, per presentare poi i temi e le direzioni che caratterizzano la ricerca attuale: la sociosemiotica, il tema del corpo e dell'estesia.
