Synopsis
Pachuco: Out of El Segundo Barrio is a narrative of early experiences of the author which reflects many events that were common to the Chicano community of his time (roughly 1925 - 1950). But it also extends beyond that, and is supported by many appropriate instances of the greater history that impacted his family circle along with the greater Chicano community. The setting of the account is largely in the city of El Paso, termed by the Chicano locals as El Pachuco. Possibly more significant in indicating the nature of this account is that the more specific place of his residence was El Segundo Barrio, as the Second Ward area of the city was known to the Mexican-derived part of the El Paso population. The narration proceeds from the author's birth through his pre-school years, elementary school, high school, naval service in World War II, and finally through his undergraduate years in college.
