Initially, due to what has been characterized as yellow journalism, the Spanish were accused of blowing it up with a mine. Several additional investigations in the following decades, however, indicated that it was more likely to have been an internal explosion caused by ignition of a gas emitted in its coal bunker. In any case, the incident was in part responsible for triggering the Spanish-American War and Cuba's fight for independence. Includes primarily views of the aftermath of the explosion, the top of the ship still projecting above the water, along with grave digging, funerals for the dead and the many stages of the eventual recovery and partial repair of the vessel before its subsequent sinking at sea. Complete as issued. 48 different photos, a two-panel foldout and an introductory text. Original tie cord present. Textured blue cover with gilt letteri...more details below”
