Founded by noted surfer and surfing filmmaker Walt Phillips and "The Godfather of Surfphotography" LeRoy Grannis in 1962, SI ceased publication in 1967. SI's editorial board reads like a Who's Who of North Shore surfing: Along with Phillips and Grannis there was designer and record album and poster illustrator John Van Hamersveld, Australian surfer and photographer Barbara Walton, Dr. Don James ("The Premier Photographer of Surfing") and surfing legend Lee Peterson. James' photos were especially notable for having been taken in the 1930's, when the sport was in its infancy in California. Tom Davies at Malibu cover photo. Includes numerous additional photos of pioneer surfers. Of special note is a large two-panel fold-out photo of Jose Angel surfing at Waimea Bay, also taken by James.
