Seatpost was likely ovalized as a result of the bending process when creating the setback. The width at the rail clamps was also wider than standard, so getting the saddle rails to fit was very tight. In the end, I made it work, but it took effort.

Sadly I bought two, because it wasn't clear they were sold in pairs. When I compared the length of the spindles with stamped Speedplay 59mm pedal spindles the +9mm is axlually 2.5mm longer. So perhaps J&L is measuring their +9mm from a "stock" 53mm axle length, as opposed to the normal 50mm axle.
