Notes
Stephanie released her latest CD, 'O Começo, New Beginnings in Brazilian Jazz' in June 2004. Recorded in Rio de Janeiro and Berkeley, California, the CD features compositions with the 2008 Latin Grammy winner and samba jazz legend, vocalist Leny Andrade, and a stellar group of musicians. In June 2007, Stephanie and her band toured in California with Leny Andrade, who flew from Rio to California for these engagements! Included in their itinerary were sold out opening night performances at the prestigious 'Healdsburg Jazz Festival' in lucious northern California wine country, a week long sound feast of jazz luminaries from around the world. The tour concluded with a 3 night run at the renowned Jazz Bakery in LA. Stephanie holds a Piano Performance degree from the University of Michigan School of Music. In addition to classical performance, she has performed in ensembles of fusion, rock, Klezmer, jazz, swing, Javanese Gamelan, and Brasilan jazz. She worked for a decade with vocalist Kathleen Moore in an award winning jazz duo, opening for Abbey Lincoln and Phoebe Snow in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Other venues Stephanie has performed include, The San Jose Jazz Festival, The Healdsburg Jazz Festival, Michigan Womans' Music Festival, the Vancouver Folk Festival, The National Womans' Music Festival,The Jazz School, Berkeley,CA and LA's Jazz Bakery. Stephanie is currently heard around the San Francisco Bay Area with her band 'O Começo', with the Rio born vocal phenomenon, Claudia Villela, solo and in jazz ensembles. Besides performing, Stephanie has taught piano for over 20 years, and is the mother of two lovely and lively children. 'Pianist-composer Stephanie Ozer...is an exquisite talent...' - Jesse Chuy Varela , SAN FRANCISCO CHRONICLE; host of KCSM 'Brazilian nights on the bay' 'Stephanie Ozer is a very talented and inspired pianist who has infused her musicality with the Brazilian vibe. Her choice of material, good harmonic taste and sensitive interpretations are a joy to listen to. She has captured the rhythmic drive of samba without losing her beautiful touch at the keys. I totally recommend 'O Começo' to all listeners...'- JOVINO SANTOS NETO, Pianist, Composer, Musicologist 'The CD is a romantic album of bossas and sambas, that eloquently displays Ozer's tasteful piano style...elegant and precise... Andrade's throaty singing, delivered with a world-weary moan, tells of depth and experience. When she reaches the aching bridge of Ivan Lins' ballad 'Meu Pais' (My Country) or bounces into some light scatting in the upbeat 'Rio,' the moment is utterly winning... Ozer and guitarist Randy Vincent, who sits in on four tracks, share especially strong rapport. The pair create a gentle rush on Hermeto Pascoal's 'Bebé' and seem to play two halves of a continuous solo in 'O Começo Da Festa...Ozer has a strong ryhthmic approach with a light touch and subtle harmonies' Forrest Dylan Bryant, ALL ABOUT JAZZ MAGAZINE www.allaboutjazz.com/php/article.php?id=18887 ' Stephanie's own composition, 'Bronx to Brasil' is a standout, combining unconventional instrumentation with a tight arrangement and fluid harmonies. Also compelling are the tracks featuring Leny Andrade, an excellent resonant alto who serendades in Portugese. Close your eyes, listen to Leny's and Stephanie's collaboration on the opening track, 'Meu Pais', and feel the breeze off of Ipanema Beach' -Michael Gallant, KEYBOARD MAGAZINE, November Issue, 2005 www.keyboardmag.com Stephanie Ozer - Piano (all tracks) Leny Andrade- Vocals Nema Antunes- Bass Mary Fettig - flutes and saxes Jim Passarell - Trumpet and Flugelhorn Erivelton Silva - Drums Phil Thompson- Drums, Percussion Scott Thompson - Acoustic and Electric Bass Randy Vincent- Guitar Roni Von Santos - Percussion stephanieozer@stephanieozer.com Stephanie .
