Synopsis
Based on the author's traditional take on the martial arts in a column called Karate Way and examining the origins of the tonfa or the popularity of mixed-martial arts tournaments, this title provides a historical and philosophical take on his subjects., Dave Lowry started writing for Black Belt more than 20 years ago, sharing his traditional take on the martial arts in a monthly column called Karate Way. Lowry's entertaining, sometimes controversial voice is evident throughout his columns, gathered here for the first time. Whether examining the origins of the tonfa or the popularity of mixed-martial arts tournaments, Lowry consistently provides a unique historical and philosophical take on his subjects., A collection of more than 70 of Dave Lowry's Karate Way columns published in BLACK BELT from 1995 to 2005. Essays detail his experience and opinions regarding Asian culture and traditional martial arts. Heavy on Japanese terminology, very different from Bill Wallace's laid-back everyman approach. Much more academic, but still witty. Topics include: discussion of ancient and modern masters, tenets of the budo, hazards and benefits of martial arts training, sensei traditions, the long-term learning process of "true" martial artists, karate defense techniques, dojo ethics, mental-training techniques for martial artists, history of traditional Asian martial arts, weapons techniques and history, kata applications and much more...

Item was as described. Sent extra items as a thank you for letting them know it had not been shipped, There was a shipping error. the post office had only picked one of the two bins they were supposed to post, They thought it had shipped. They found the bin they thought had shipped and sent the item express the next day, When I alerted them that it had not come they shipped it with added items as an apology. I was very pleased with the items. I would recommend this seller to others.
