Reviews
"With this scholarly biography Upton fills a long-standing void in the literature of Swedish history in the early modern period....highly recommended for university and larger public libraries." Choice, "Upton's Charles KXI is certainly the most important book on late seventeenth-century Sweden to appear in English to date." Paul Douglas Lockhart, The International History Review, "Anthony F. Upton's book builds on a thorough familiarity both with the archival material in Sweden and with the languages necessary for its use...this book, in its detailed account of one of the most extraordinary examples, provides ample evidence that no generalized model does justice to the many alternative routes to state formation." Synopsis
The reading public outside Sweden knows little of that country's history, beyond the dramatic and short-lived era in the seventeenth century when Sweden under Gustavus Adolphus became a major European power by her intervention in the Thirty Years War. In the last decades of the seventeenth century another Swedish king, Charles XI, launched a less dramatic but remarkable bid to stabilize and secure Sweden's position as a major power in northern Europe and as master of the Baltic Sea. This project, which is almost unknown to students of history outside Sweden, involved a comprehensive overhaul of the government and institutions of the kingdom, on the basis of establishing Sweden as a model of absolute monarchy. This 1998 book gives an account of what was achieved under the absolutist direction of a distinctly unglamorous, but pious and conscientious ruler., The reading public outside Sweden knows little of that country's history, beyond the era in the seventeenth century when Sweden under Gustavus Adolphus became a major European power by her intervention in the Thirty Years' War. - t***t (305)- Feedback left by buyer.Past 6 monthsVerified purchaseAAAA++++ SELLER!!!! Book looks new. I've purchased from this seller before and they are awesome. Book was in better than described condition and the price was the best I could find anywhere. Shipping was very fast and book was nicely wrapped in a mylar envelope. My very highest recommendation for Half-Price-Books-Inc! I'll absolutely be buying from them again soon. Thank you-
- c***r (565)- Feedback left by buyer.Past monthVerified purchaseMost importantly, the book condition was as specified. Many thanks for that. Also, the book was delivered quickly from the USA to the UK. The price was "okay" for a rare and out-of-print book. However, one small point of constructive criticism: the packaging could have been a little bit better, in order to better protect the book in transit. The book was sent in a plastic/light bubble mailer only. It would have benefited greatly from cardboard packaging. Thank you for considering my suggestion.
- 7***- (22)- Feedback left by buyer.Past monthVerified purchaseThe item arrived in better condition than described. The book's appearance is at least very good condition. The packaging unfortunately had small holes in it. I live in an area that is prone to intense rain and those holes could have caused problems. The weather has been dry, fortunately. The price was a bargain! I'll work with this vendor again in the future. Please, get more protective bags.
