As the blade is repeatedly sharpened the cutting edge keeps moving back and the flat on the ura side disappeares. Ura dashi or tapping the ura out to form a new flat is difficult. This piece of engineering genous makes it possible to hit the soft iron a consistant distance from the edge aside to side with consistant force.
