The HVL-F43AM shoe mount flash from Sony is lightweight and compact, so it won’t take up very much room in your carrying case. Its zoom head allows you to illuminate subjects with clarity even under conditions of extremely poor light. It has a built-in wide panel that supports light coverage to a focal length of 15 millimeters when triggered by the camera. Its proprietary Quick Shift Bounce system enables the HVI-F43AM to distribute horizontal illumination evenly. The flash can pivot a full 90 degrees in both the right and the left directions. This ability is especially useful for taking portrait shots in dim lighting.This Sony HVL-F43AM flash measures 3 inches by 5.125 inches by 3.5 inches and weighs approximately 0.75 pounds. A user manual is available for download as a pdf file. The unit requires four AA batteries in order to operate. An indicator on the data panel will begin to blink when your batteries are low and need to be replaced. The unit will switch into power save mode if it’s on but unused for more than three minutes.The HVL-F43AM flash is compatible with most new Sony models, including the SLT-A99, SLT-A58, NEX-6, NEX-VG900, NEX-VG30, Cyber-shot DSC-HX50, DSC-RX1, and DSC-RX1R models. It’s also compatible with interchangeable-lens Sony camcorders as long as they’re equipped with a Multi Interface Shoe connection slot.The Sony HVI-F43AM is an excellent flash with a number of sophisticated functions. The brightness of its high-power LED light can be adjusted to ten different levels. The HVL-F43AM uses color temperature information to correct the white balance in your photographs automatically. It also automatically calculates optimal illumination coverage using information from your image sensor. This Sony unit can deploy wireless control in shooting situations that require multiple flash effects. You can use wireless technology to couple the flash built into your camera with your Sony unit. Once the two flashes are coordinated, you can time them to go off at different intervals. You can also use your HVL-F43AM as a controller to trigger any number of external flashes if your camera supports lighting ratio control.For added safety, this Sony unit contains an internal circuit that will suspend automatically if the unit starts to overheat. The unit is resistant to both dust and moisture, so it can be used for outdoor photography projects. This device also lets you try a test flash before you take an actual shot.“Shoe mount” is the nickname given to external flashguns that work in conjunction with a camera. They fire when you depress your shutter button. In addition to providing better illumination for backlit scenes and other problematic situations, flash mounts can also create very interesting shadows.
