Fussballvereine gelten als Symbole der Zugehoerigkeit und Rivalitat. Was aber liegt der Zuordnung zu einer bestimmten Fangemeinschaft zu Grunde, wie wird ein Mensch zum Fan eines bestimmten Vereins? Diese Fragen werden hier anhand des Beispiels der Fans vom HSV und St. Pauli thematisiert. Fur deutsche Verhaltnisse ist die Rivalitat zweier Profi-Clubs in einer Stadt ein seltenes Phanomen. Zudem hat die Fangemeinschaft des FC St. Pauli seit den 1980er Jahren in ihrer Aussenwirkung eine besondere Stellung eingenommen. Deshalb bieten sich diese Vereine geradezu an, um die in der Fan-Soziologie meist nur am Rande dargestellten Themen der Herkunft der Fans und ihrer Sozialstruktur zu erforschen. Grundlage der Analyse ist die Frage nach der Sozialisation. Demnach nehmen Faktoren wie Erziehung und sozialstrukturelle Bedingungen Einfluss auf die Beziehung des Fans zum Fanobjekt. Ausgewertet wurden Selbstdarstellungen der Fans, proto-wissenschaftliche und journalistische Artikel sowie wissenschaftliche Texte. Als Resultat werden Thesen uber Unterschiede auf den Dimensionen der Identitatsbildung, politischen UEberzeugung, regionalen Herkunft, Einkommen und Bildungsniveau der Fangemeinschaften begrundet.
