Dabei geht es ihm vor allem um eines: Er will deutlich machen, dass es zwischen dem Protestantismus eines Luther, Zwingli oder Calvin und demjenigen, welchen er in seiner Zeit vorfand, eindeutige Unterschiede gibt. Dies wird schon deutlich bei seiner Wortwahl. Das was der Protestantismus zu seinen Anfangen war, bezeichnet er als Altprotestantismus und das was er in der Neuzeit darstellte, wird von ihm als Neuprotestantismus gekennzeichnet. Aber diese Wortwahl macht auch einen weiteren Punkt deutlich. Beide Formen des Protestantismus sind nicht zwei ganzlich unterschiedliche Arten der Religion, bei denen nur noch eine Beziehung in der Namensgleichheit besteht. Vielmehr versucht er deutlich zu machen, dass zwischen beiden eine eindeutige Beziehung zu finden ist. So stand fur ihn fest, dass auch schon der Altprotestantismus jenen modernen Geist in sich trug, der dann im Zuge der Aufklarung zur vollen Blute kommen konnte. So hat der Protestantismus die religioese Gemeinschaftsbildung auf das Prinzip der Freiwilligkeit ubertragen und er hat ein voellig emanzipiertes weltliches System neben sich anerkannt, auf dessen Beeinflussung der Neuprotestantismus, im Gegensatz zum Altprotestantismus, verzichtet.1 So wird der Neuprotestantismus fester Bestandteil der modernen Welt und er vermag es mit der neuen, emanzipierten und weltlichen Kultur in Wechselbeziehung zu treten.
