In October 1862, Charles Darwin wrote a letter to a friend ending with the following words, When you next see my old ship mate Mr Martens ...remember me very kindly to him. I have two of his sketches hanging up in one of my rooms. Conrad Martens had sailed on the Beagle with Darwin and knew him well. His sketches and paintings of parts of South America and the Pacific Islands began a career which was to end in Australia where he fast became the leading colonial artist of his time. The paintings of Conrad Martens can be found in public and private collections throughout the world. The largest collection is housed by the State Library of New South Wales in Sydney which has 29 oil paintings, 118 watercolours, 1535 smaller drawings and many manuscripts and journals. This volume presents many of his lesser-known works which demonstrate the breadth of his art.
