I tried both with the included 12v cable and without. I even tried an external PCIe riser but could not get the adapter to detect any pcie cards (graphics card, HBA, and network card all were not detected)

Red wire is negative, and black wire is positive for some reason. Feels very DIY, but I don't mind that. Works on my e6430, gen 2 even. Cool product.
