Designer Mike Singleton's Ashes of Empire (from Gametek) deals with the turmoil of Eastern Europe and requires you, as Special Commissioner of the United Community (read UN), to balance all aspects of an unstable region and bring some semblance of order to a fractured socio-economic world. The ultimate goal in this alternate reality exercise is to restore peace and democratic accord to the Confederation of Syndicalist Republics (CSR), an Eastern Bloc nation, unraveling as the various factions within fight for military, economic and social stability. <br><br>Employing aspects of various genres, Ashes of Empire combines facets of combat, quasi-role playing, arcade action, and strategy (diplomacy and militaristic) to solve the conflicts of this strife-ridden, unsettled world. The game employs over 6,000 potential characters, a 3-D environment of 2.8 million square miles, and more than 9,000 locations. This vastness provides a huge field of play requiring considerable acumens in controlling and monitoring all phases of a chaotic political situation with the prospect of nuclear devastation looming overhead.
