Synopsis
This volume grew out of the work of the Linear Algebra Curriculum Study Group (organized by David Carlson, Charles R. Johnson, David C. Lay & A. Duane Porter), & the 1993 Special Issue on Linear Algebra of the College Mathematics Journal (then edited by Ann Watkins & William Watkins). This book argues that the teaching of elementary linear algebra can be made more effective by emphasizing applications, exposition, & pedagogy. * Relevant applications serve as motivation for students & as sources of stimulating & challenging problems. * Effective exposition finds the right way to communicate concepts is especially important in the teaching of linear algebra, often the first course in which students come to grips with abstraction & complexity, & with multiple representations of the same idea. * Attention to pedagogy that takes into account how students learn, technology, & new teaching ideas such as cooperative learning can go a long way toward improving the teaching of linear algebra. This volume includes the recommendations of the Linear Algebra Curriculum Study Group, with their core syllabus for the first course, & the thoughts of mathematics faculty who have taught linear algebra using these recommendations. It includes elucidation of these ideas, trenchant criticism of them, & a report on putting them into practice., The distinguished mathematician John Conway presents quadratic forms in a pictorial way that enables the reader to understand them mathematically without proving theorems in the traditional fashion. One learns to sense their properties. In his customary enthusiastic style, Conway uses his theme to cast light on all manner of mathematical topics from algebra, number theory and geometry, including many new ideas and features.
