About this product

Product Information

As an early 8 MB cartridge game, Gaiares can be known as one of the most difficult horizontal shooters available, though it can also stand out from other horizontal shooters because of its unique power up system that allows players to leech weapons from enemy ships. It was developed by Telenet Japan and published by Renovation for the Sega Genesis/Mega Drive, with a release in 1990 for both Japan and North America. Your main objective in Gaiares is to rescue mother Earth. The year is 3000, and the planet has become an uninhabitable place thanks to human carelessness. Earth has recently received a warning that Queen ZZ Badnusty and an intergalactic terrorist group plan to create weapons of mass destruction using Earth’s pollution. If the citizens of Earth aren’t able to stop the queen themselves, the United Star Cluster of Leezaluth intends to supernova Earth’s sun in order to destroy the space pirates. You play as Dan Dare, a young pilot in charge of a fighter ship equipped with the TOZ system. Alexis, the emissary from Leezaluth who delivered their message to Earth, is impressed by Dan’s willingness to fight and modifies his spacecraft to accommodate the new weapon system. She controls the TOZ system while Dan flies them towards Queen ZZ Badnusty and her Gulfers. Genesis creates Gaiares to be made up of missions, each of which contains multiple stages. The environment changes as you travel through it and tosses new obstacles at you. These include black holes and swarms of enemies, all of whom you must defeat in order to reach the boss at the end. Before you encounter the mission boss, you’ll have to defeat the sub-boss first and gain access to the final stage of the Gaiares mission. The weapon system in Gaiares is what can make it stand out from other horizontal shooters. With most games, you gain weapons by coming into contact with the power-up or boost. In Gaiares, however, you shoot out the TOZ system—a move that may look familiar to fans of R-Type. Unlike with R-Type’s Force, you can actually pick up the weapon of the enemy ship with which you’ve just made contact, allowing you to use weapons leeched from your opponents. You can steal repeatedly from the same enemy in order to strengthen your power up and max out your weapon’s strength. Gaiares features 13 weapons, and it’s up to you to figure out how to obtain them. The I-Vulcan is your default weapon, but you have the ability to pick up a variety of other types, including a plasma cannon, a somersault laser, and a vertical laser. You can also upgrade your Quark Missile, which is a separate weapon that fires along with your main one, and a shield called the Break Defender. Gaiares for the Sega Genesis/Mega Drive may remain one of the most unique horizontal shooter games in Japan and North America, both because of its power up system and because of its difficulty. The game received high ratings when it was released and can still be considered a classic today among fans of horizontal shooters and of the older console games in general.
