Winner of the 1979 Casa de las Américas Prize, the Argentine novel De dioses, hombrecitos y policías was initially banned in that country, having been edited and released in spite of the hostile political climate of the 1976 military coup. The novel, which can be read as an allegory about oppression in Argentina, is representative of those tense and violent years. Amazingly, however, this story of adversity is told with ample parody, humor, and irony. Ganadora del Premio Casa de las Américas en 1979; publicada en México, Cuba, Bulgaria, Alemania, Israel, la entonces Unión Soviética y Estados Unidos, esta novela estuvo prohibida en la Argentina hasta que en 1984 la editó la desaparecida editorial Bruguera.Costantini, notable narrador, poeta y dramaturgo, comienza la escritura de esta "historia de amor, de humor y de poesía bajo la pavorosa amenaza de la muerte" en 1975. La fue escribiendo a los saltos, escondido, ayudado por la solidaridad de un montón de personas a quienes dedica el libro. Perseguido, consciente del peligro que corría su vida, tras el golpe militar del 24 de marzo de 1976 tomó sus recaudos para salvar la obra: hacía cuatro copias del texto, una para él y las otras repartidas para su resguardo entre su sobrino Gustavo (desaparecido en 1977), su compañera de trabajo Ema Sosa y la cantante Marga Grager (su compañera de entonces).Esta novela, que puede leerse como una alegoría de la represión en la Argentina, da testimonio de la época conflictiva de aquellos años, pero lo hace a través de la parodia, el humor, la ironía. Burlarse del adversario es una estrategia para combatirlo, un modo, si se quiere, de exorcizar los demonios. Desmitifica a los dioses, que son demasiado débiles, demasiado humanos, protectores de anti-héroes y no de héroes; ridiculiza a los policías, que confunden una inofensiva asociación poética con una célula guerrillera y mira con simpatía a esos hombrecitos que, no ignorantes pero sí desentendidos de la realidad del país, han creado la asociación Polimnia, "una isla, un oasis de paz" que los une y reúne en medio del caos de violencia.Con mucho humor y situaciones disparatadas e hilarantes, Costantini denuncia el terrorismo de Estado y el modus operandi de los organismos policiales y parapoliciales y se venga de ellos ridiculizándolos.
