Synopsis
Magical fantasy and misunderstandings combined in this classic time-travel adventure. When Cyril, Robert, Anthea and Jane rescue their old friend the Psammead from a pet shop, the grateful sand fairy leads them to half an amulet which has the power to take them back in time in search of the other half - and the complete amulet can give them their heart's desire! But magic can cause problems in real life, especially when the Queen of Babylon visits the children in London . . ., This book's central problematic is to examine the impact of Max Weber's legacy on Hannah Arendt, JÜrgen Habermas and Alasdair MacIntyre. Although hailing from very different traditions, these theorists accept Weber's seminal pessimistic diagnosis of the present yet they nonetheless offer alternative conceptions of the subject, ethics and politics that allow for positive future political possibilities. Using recent writings of MacIntyre and Habermas and Arendt's posthumous publications and encompassing all their thoughts under one coherent theoretical framework, Keith Breen exposes the basic claim is that they do so by re-conceiving ethical and political life in 'intersubjective' terms. However, these alternatives are vulnerable to serious criticisms: of depoliticizing key arenas of human endeavour and of neglecting the reality of political struggle and contestation. Contributing to key contemporary debates, this book is a lucid contribution to the existing literature on Weber, Arendt, Habermas, and MacIntyre and a highly accessible and an original intervention within contemporary social and political thought. As such, it will be of interest to students and researchers alike in the area of social and political theory, as well as those within the cognate disciplines of ethics, sociology, and philosophy., At the end of Five Children and It the five children promised not to ask the Psammead for another wish as long as they lived, but expressed a half wish to see it again some time. They find 'it' again in a pet shop in Camden Town, and their magic adventures start over again. 'It' leads them to a magic amulet - half of it actually - which they use it to try and find the other half. It takes them back to ancient Egypt and Babylon. The Queen of Babylon visits them in London, bringing all her ancient customs with her - which is awkward. They visit the lost continent of Atlantis. They see Julius Caesar in the flesh, but none of these adventures run smoothly, and if they forget the 'word of power' or lose the amulet, what would happen to them?
