Synopsis
Only 11 years after the Wright Brothers, Britain's air forces took to the skies in 1914. The Royal Flying Corps flew missions over the Western Front while the Royal Naval Air Service was initially assigned the defense of the British Isles against the Zeppelins and Germany's first experimental long-range bombers. The RFC was part of the British army and the RNAS was part of the Royal Navy. On April 1, 1918 the Royal Flying Corps and the Royal Naval Air Service were combined to form the Royal Air Force, the world's first independent air arm.Based in part on contemporary accounts preserved at London's Imperial War Museum, this account of British air operations goes beyond many which cover only the Western Front, to describe actions over the North Sea, at Gallipoli, in the Middle East and Russia., This book is being published to co-incide wi th the 80th anniversary of the Battle of the Somme. It conta ins eye-opening accounts of the lives of airmen in the First World War, collected by a flier in the Second World War. '

- a***u (990)- Feedback left by buyer.Past 6 monthsVerified purchaseItem as described. I wasn't expecting it to have a brodart cover but that was a plus. Very well packed. In fact, too well packed. Getting through all the packaging was like peeling an onion, layer after layer after layer, and a whole lot of excessive tape - you'd have thought the item was fine china and not a book. I am very happy to recommend this seller and would buy from again, despite the difficulty with removing all the packaging.THUNDER AT DAWN- A David Cochrane Smith WW1 RN novel, Evans, 1st US HBdj VG (#315627922088)
