About this product

Product Information

Many families have little knowledge of their historical lineage, but one illustrious Napa family has remarkably well-preserved records that provide a clear perspective of life in the pioneer days of California. Nathan Coombs, the Uncle of the Seven Sisters, was the founder of Napa City in 1847. His sister Minerva then moved her family to Napa from Iowa via the Isthmus of Panama. When Minerva died in 1873 her seven daughters left Napa for farm life in the north and south and to 1878 Japan. One sister married an established rancher, the son of the first commercial winemaker in Napa. This marriage failed suddenly with marriage to a younger sister. The shattered family overcame this difficult period, eventually involving 14 children. All 14 grew to strong and productive citizens, and, amazingly, five of these Patchett/Carpenter offspring lived to be over 100 years. One centenarian donated her body to Stanford University for research on longevity. The unique tales that were born from the journey, including the settlement of virgin land and the scattering of the family after the family's matriarch passes away, are rarely noted in history. Thanks to exquisitely meticulous record-keeping and stunning photographs, the book reads like an action-adventure without guns and violence. Deeply profound insights into a time so long ago enrich the value of the story. In the isolated forest area called Annapolis we get a close look at the real pioneer life living off of the land and raising their own food without electricity nor any modern conveniences, where laziness is not known. Village life in 19th century Annapolis, CA is featured for the family of one of the seven sisters, while three of the sisters went to Japan starting in 1878. Photos of a 1907 wedding in Japan are included in addition to historically unique stories in Japan. Dozens of portraits and family photographs bring life to the stories of these illustrious pioneer families.
