Obwohl die Lilienfusse als eine spezifisch chinesische Kulturauspragung gelten, sind sie nicht allein als chinesische Besonderheit, sondern vielmehr als Ausdruck eines anthropologisch konstanten Strebens nach UEbergangsriten und gesellschaftlicher Strukturierung zu verstehen. Die Autorin markiert die Basis des Ritus im konfuzianischen System als Statussymbol. So wurde er von den Frauen akzeptiert und mit seiner Hilfe konnte den Madchen ihre Rolle in der Gesellschaft zugewiesen werden.
