Returning to the space combat theme, Star Fox: Assault picks up the battle action, one year after the events of the previous game in the Star Fox video game series. The action-adventure video game includes multiplayer and single player modes with support for up to four players simultaneously. Characters may choose to move throughout the environments in Airwing flying crafts, Landmaster tanks or to travel by foot. Vehicular travel creates rail shooter action, while pedestrians get a third-person shooter game. The bonus scrolling action-adventure video game, Xevious, is accessed when the player amasses enough silver medals. Set in the familiar Lylat system, Star Fox: Assault introduces the half-machine/half-living Aparoids to the familiar Star Fox team. Star Fox attempts to prevent the Aparoids from annexing Lylat while engaging in shooting battles and answering distress calls. New maps, new weapons and customizable on/off options let Star Fox: Assault players utilize different styles of play. The Star Fox video game has a multiplayer mode that enables the Demon Sniper and Demon Launcher weapons, while single player mode features several shooting gallery levels in both the air and ground environments. Star Fox: Assault for Nintendo GameCube also features improved effects and graphics such as rainbows, and various elements that appear when the background is accidentally hit.
