Synopsis
A brilliantly detailed visual representation of the only US World War II destroyer that has retained its original configuration all the way up to today., A brilliantly detailed visual representation of the only US World War II destroyer that has retained its original configuration all the way up to today. USS Kidd (DD-661) was launched February 28, 1943, and served in the Pacific from August 1943 until the end of World War II, taking part in operations in the Marshall Islands, the Marianas campaign, and the Philippines. In early 1945, she joined Task Force 58 (TF 58) for the invasion of Okinawa. After service in the Korean War as part of Task Force 77 she alternated West Pacific cruises with operations on the West Coast. She was decommissioned on June 19, 1964 and entered the Atlantic Reserve Fleet. She has been docked at Baton Rouge since May 23, 1982, when she was transferred to the Louisiana Naval War Memorial Commission and is now on public view there as a museum vessel. Never modernized, USS Kidd is the only destroyer to retain its World War II appearance. This brand-new addition to the "Anatomy of the Ship" series combines a brief narrative history of the USS Kidd , its design, and construction, with a series of detailed plans of the destroyer, contemporary photographs, and Stefan Draminski's superbly detailed digital color artworks., Packed with detailed line drawings, superb 3D views of the ship throughout its career, and illustrations of every detail, this book, reconstructs and dissects USS Kidd, the most original survivor of the Fletcher class, the US Navy's most famous class of World War II destroyer. Kidd fought in many campaigns throughout the late Pacific War, from the Marshall Islands to the invasion of Okinawa, and postwar, served in Korea. Since 1982, Kidd has been a museum ship at Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Drawing on Stefan Draminski's new research and his acclaimed 3D illustration techniques, this is the most comprehensive examination of USS Kidd ever published. The detail in the illustrations is fully explained by descriptive keys, and supported by technical information, photographs and a concise history of the ship's construction and service. Features of the book A full description of the design and construction of the ship including wartime modifications and career history, More than 600 perspective and 3-view drawings of the ship's main features - general arrangements, hull construction and protection, superstructure, armament and fire control, fittings, and boats, Over 400 colour 3D illustrations and 25 photographs A superb new addition to the Anatomy of the Ship series, suitable for modelmakers, ship enthusiasts and naval historians.
