Reviews
"Offers brief, invaluable descriptions of several countries' circumstances...readers will gain much from this astute analysis." -Publishers Weekly "Peter Schwab has written this book with courage, honesty, and enormous insight, as well as with a deep sense of humanity. He is forthright enough to tell the truth without qualification. Africa's profound tragedy has been deepened, if not caused, by autocratic and despotic leadership, and predatory regimes supported by an international environment characterized first by the dynamic of global polarity and now by postCold War realities. For anyone interested in the reality of Africa, this is the book to read." -Amos Sawyer, President of Liberia, 1990-1994

Synopsis
Schwab discusses how myriad Subsaharan African states have all but ceased to exist as organized entities, with some spiraling into complete disintegration. Several were propelled into tyranny, others collapsed into civil war and ethnic conflict, while cross border invasions threatened international peace and security. Violations of political and economic human rights by predatory indigenous government are discussed, as is the role of the UN and the United States in largely neglecting horrific phenomena. Widespread poverty and the AIDS pandemic are identified as central factors contributing to bleakness this region faces. The book concludes with a discussion of whether Africa can survive this crisis situation and a consideration of the appropriate Western response.
