Square Enix's popular coupling with the Disney universe continues in "Kingdom Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance" for the Nintendo 3DS. Created and released exclusively for the 3DS, this seventh installment in the hit series was released in 2012. It features a brand new story and updated game play to ensure that it meets the expectations of "Kingdom Hearts" veterans while seizing the hearts of beginners.The battle to save the universe from the evil Heartless continues with "Dream Drop Distance," which follows Keyblade wielders Sora and Riku as they train to master their unconventional weapons in the Mark of Mastery exam. This training is no laughing matter, with the two playable characters facing off with foes old and new. The Heartless return and are joined by Dream Eaters, savage monsters that do exactly what it sounds like.The "Kingdom Hearts" series is known for its combination of high octane action with levels and chapters designed after Disney properties. Five of the dream worlds in this game derive from Disney franchises. As always, classic Disney characters such as Mickey Mouse, Donald Duck, and Goofy interact with gamers during their adventures. Players will find themselves adventuring through the stomach of the whale from "Pinocchio," climbing the Hunchback of Notre Dame's tower, and facing off against the monstrous Czernobog in the world from "Fantasia." Kingdom Hearts veterans will also recognize Traverse Town and the World That Never Was. However, for the first time in the series, characters from the Square Enix side of the equation come not from the "Final Fantasy" franchise, but from the modern DS role-playing game "The World Ends with You." "Dream Drop Distance" also includes songs from the soundtrack of "The World Ends with You."Players rotate between the two main characters as they navigate the game worlds. You automatically switch characters when your Drop Gauge depletes, and each world must be played from the perspective of both Sora and Riku before it is completed. Each character has a unique plot so that you get to play each chapter in two unique ways. To advance your characters, you must recruit nightmare-eating Spirits to gain new abilities, attacks, and co-op moves. "Kingdom Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance" also includes optional player versus player, or PvP, components with the addition of Flick Rush. This mode allows two Nintendo 3DS systems to link wirelessly so that players can face off head to head. Flick Rush mode involves teams of Dream Eaters which battle in Sora and Riku's place, with cards flicked onto the screen clarifying their statistics and abilities. The first team of Dream Eaters to fall loses. The 3D action finds gamers engaging in fast paced combat, using the touchscreen to execute special moves, and taking on large bosses in order to unlock the keyholes in each level. The polished visuals and well crafted sound effects make each battle a spectacle, and the sheer versatility of each character ensures that you'll learn to use their abilities in new and exciting ways even as they train with their Keyblades. You can leap into the world of "Kingdom Hearts" and learn the secrets of the Keyblade in "Dream Drop Distance."
