Dennis J. Tini, WSU Distinguished Professor, is internationally in demand as a conductor, jazz pianist, clinician/adjudicator and arts consultant, and has appeared regularly at major music festivals, universities, and conferences throughout Europe, South Africa, Canada, South America and the United States during the past thirty years. Professor Tini is the recipient of numerous National, State, University and international awards for excellence in music performance, teaching, leadership and service. Professor Tini served as Chairman of the Wayne State University Department of Music in Detroit from 1992 - 2005. Conductor of the University Choral Union and Co-Founder of the Jazz Studies Division, Professor Tini is Director of the WSU Jazztet/Combos Program, heads the Graduate Choral Conducting Program, and serves as Area Coordinator for the WSU Music Management/Music Technology Programs. Tini, a full professor at Wayne State University and past College/University Chair for the American Choral Directors Association/Michigan, has served as WSU Director of Choral Activities, Conductor of the Concert Chorale and Symphonic Chorus & Orchestra, and serves as a judge for the ACDA National Conducting Competition. Conducting teachers have included Robert Shaw, Sixten Ehrling, Malcolm Johns, Howard Swan, Harry Langsford and Charles Hirt. Choral clinics have been taken with Roger Wagner, William Dawson, Gregg Smith, Margaret Hillis, Alice Parker, Julius Herford and Weston Noble. Tini's voice studies were taken with MET artists Blake Stern and Robert Cowden. Dennis Tini has conducted orchestras for Hollywood movies, directed national corporate musical productions, composed music for documentaries/commercials and has appeared with Buddy Rich, the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, the Brazeal Dennard Chorale, the Dennis Tini Trio, Jon Faddis, Don Ellis, J.C. Heard, Marvin Stamm and Bunky Green, among others. Professor Tini has conducted and appeared as piano soloist with the WSU Jazz Lab Band, Vocal Jazz Ensemble, Jazztet and Concert Chorale in numerous concert tours throughout Europe, and served as Director of Jazz Studies at Wayne State University for many years. Professor Tini has served on National Endowment for the Arts Music Review Panels, the United States Information Agency International Arts America Evaluation Committee, is Past President of the 9500-member International Association for Jazz Education with members from over 40 countries, and founder of the IAJE International Music Relief Effort for South Africa. Professor Tini has also served as an External Accreditation Evaluator for the National Association of Schools of Music. Dennis Tini serves on the IAJE Past-Presidents Advisory Council, Chamber Music Society of Detroit Board of Directors, is Past-President of the Pi Kappa Lambda National Music Honor Society/WSU Chapter, and served on the Detroit Symphony Orchestra Education Advisory Council. Prof. Tini has appeared frequently as a choral director for the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, and has prepared the Symphony Choruses for Neeme Jarvi, Antal Dorati, Erich Kunzel, and Itzhak Perlman, among others. Professor Tini, recipient of the WSU President's Award for Excellence in Teaching in 1996 and the 1999 President's Exceptional Service Award, was appointed WSU Distinguished Professor in 2005.
