Faces are filled with desperation and the hollowness of waiting too long for better days when Tom Raynor arrives from the country to find work in Sydney in 1931, the midst of the Great Depression. He finds lodgings at a hotel owned by the Mendels, a family of Russian Jews. The family - Mick, his wife Chana, daughters Ruth and Miriam and Micks Trotskyite brother Jakob,have a profound effect on Toms life and writing career which he recounts through his diaries.
