Gamers return to the demon-filled Netherworld for grid-based strategy RPG action and quirky humor in Disgaea D2: A Brighter Darkness. A sequel to the 2003 title Disgaea: Hour of Darkness, A Brighter Darkness finds the self-centered Prince Laharl finally elevated to Overlord status. But that lofty title seems to work in name only, as the citizens of the Neverworld don't offer Laharl much respect, with the Krichevskoy Group even threatening rebellion. Thus, players must join the disloyal vassal Etna and travel all around the Netherworld to rescue Laharl's reputation.<br><br>Turn-based battlefield action finds gamers moving their party around a grid in order to attack foes, with every member of the group participating before the turn is finished. There are many ways in which players can deal increased damage, including attacks from the side or rear, placing multiple party members in the same area for a combo attack, and unleashing powerful Special Skills. Gamers can use eight different weapons to attack foes, including the new Book weapon that allows them to summon powerful monsters, and the Lift & Throw mechanic returns, once again letting players pick up and toss enemies into danger or throw a party member to an otherwise inaccessible location. <br><br>Though Laharl, Etna, and the angel Flonne are all powerful in battle, most of the combat is handled by vassals that gamers create themselves. Vassals can be highly customized, with players creating humanoid or angelic characters and then customizing their gender, appearance, job class, weapons, skills, and even personality. Gamers can also create and customize monster characters, but the monsters must first be defeated in battle. The variety in character skill sets lets players combine party members to pull off nearly unstoppable attacks, while some characters can be reincarnated to enhance their abilities, and others can now ride into battle on the backs of new monster mounts.<br><br>The Overlord's Castle serves as the base of all operations in A Brighter Darkness, with gamers visiting shops to purchase useful items, heading to the hospital to heal battle wounds, talking to allies to build stronger bonds, or dropping in on the Dark Assembly to learn about Netherworld's issues, battle rival senators, or perhaps buy a few votes in order to get bills passed.<br><br>All launch copies of the game include an official soundtrack CD, bonus CD with 13 tracks, and an art print.
