Notes
On the border of the Quarter, at the corner of Esplanade and Burgundy, between the bustle of Bourbon Street and the new musical center of New Orleans music, Frenchmen Street, is a 24 hour dive bar and restaurant/ listening room, BUFFA'S. Buffa's has long been known as a home for folk, blues, traditional jazz, and the musical standards of the New Orleans repertoire, but the Back Room also hosts some of the finest songwriters and innovators in town today. A Jazz Band played when Vincent Buffa opened the bar in 1939. When the Back Room was converted from a garage to a private club room, live music was just one of the amenities offered. Through the turn of the 20th century, musicians, including Walter Wolfman Washington performed here. When the Rogers family began running the bar, rehabilitating the Back Room was a priority. Every effort has been made to make it a comfortable listening room, with great sound, food, and service. In a town with over a thousand restaurants and hundreds of music venues, attracting and keeping a happy family of musicians is the key to attracting music lovers, whether or not they were born and raised in New Orleans. This compilation is a healthy mix of music of world renowned veterans, local heroes, and up-and-coming writers and musicians. One of the joys of booking music in a family friendly, smoke-free listening room attached to a venerable neighborhood bar in New Orleans, is that I know Jazz Brunch with the Dixieland powerhouse of the Some Like It Hot! Traditional Jazz Band will be jumping. Wednesdays will always surprise, as the World's Strangest Open Mike lives up to it's name. Thursday's Piano Night is Trad Jazz at it's finest. The rest of the week might mean jazz, rock, spoken word, old old school New Orleans R&B, or comedy. Or maybe a Saints game, HBO's TREME, or a documentary on Mardi Gras Indians. Or maybe a silent movie with live musical accompaniment. Whatever is happening, I hope you can join us for dinner and a cocktail, or watch us live streaming on the net through playjones. Thanks for listening. Welcome to the family. HONOR- Heroes Of New Orleans Rock features Jerry Jumonville and Freddie Staehle, who have been playing together since 1956, backing everyone from Al Hirt to Harry Nillson, Doctor John to Lowell George, and too many others to list. HARRY MAYRONNE was born and raised pretty much in the Quarters. Who else could write a love song to a street? MUMBLES came from Brooklyn, but found a home in New Orleans HONEYPOTS combine three talented singer/ songwriters, Lynn Drury, Margie Perez and Monica MacIntyre. When they get together, they are way more than the sum of their parts. GINA FORSYTH could make a living just playing Cajun fiddle. Which would be a great loss, as her songs have a way of bringing truth and beauty in to the world. RUBY MOON sings from the great New Orleans trad jazz song book. If you didn't listen to Bart Ramsey's words, you'd think it was just another hit from 1937. ROYAL ROUNDERSplay every Saturday night at Buffa's. Here, their bass player takes you on a tour of his hometown. DAVIS ROGAN wrote the songs played by his doppleganger, Davis Macalery, on HBO's Treme. NATASHA SANCHEZ is a photographer and songwriter, known for for witty ditties, and was crowned Miss Open Mic this summer by her peers. THADDEUS CONTI, a poet, in the truest sense of the word ANTOINE DIEL from L.A. to LA, he is known for his voice, but this track, recorded weeks after his mother's passing, shows his talent as a writer as well as interpreter of other's tunes. RUBY ROSS is an up and coming songwriter from the Blue Ridge Mountains, who has found her voice in the swamps of Louisiana SOME LIKE IT HOT! Provide the soundtrack for the best sunday brunch in New Orleans.
