About this product
Product Information
1942: Pacific Air War Gold strives to recreate the events of World War II over the Pacific Ocean after America's joining of the conflict. The game includes the most decisive battles of the war, including Midway and the Coral Sea, amongst others. The game also features sixteen flyable planes, including the famous Japanese Zero and the Grumman Wildcat. In this game, you may play for the honor of the Americans, or for the glory of the Japanese.

There are several ways to play 1942: Pacific Air War Gold. The first way is entitled "Carrier Battle," and puts you in tactical command of all of your ships in the area, depending on the scenario. In a game style similar to Task Force: 1942, the player is presented with a map and a general objective. It is then up to the player to control the direction and speed of the fleet, as well as to deploy reconnaissance, search, strike, and CAP (Combat Air Patrol) flights, among others. You are in total control of your forces, but if a plane should encounter the enemy, you may take the role of the pilot in that plane.

The second mode of play is the single mission. 1942: Pacific Air War Gold features over 400 single missions to choose from, depending on the side of the war and the plane that you choose. The objectives can include CAP flights, bomber escorts, and strike missions involving both ground targets and ships, among others. If you're to get tired of the missions included with the game, a mission builder, capable of building almost any type of mission, is included as well.

The next mode of play is the "Career Mode." In this mode, you choose a plane and a squadron, and fly missions until you are killed or until the war ends. The campaigns are dynamic in nature, meaning no mission will ever be the same. This is the part of the game where you can really make a name for yourself, as promotions and medals are given with performance.

The "Gold" in the title refers to this final edition of the game. Included are the original game, the add-on scenario pack, and a multitude of multimedia videos, data, and news clippings. This Windows-based portion of the program includes interviews, news reels, historical data on events, technical data on everything in the game, and so on. The game now also includes modem play, allowing two players to play through any single mission in the game.
