Synopsis
This book is your opportunity to apply the science of learning to the way you teach science, translate the Next Generation Science Standards into your K-5 classroom practice, and enliven your teaching by engaging students in "doing" science. Activating Students' Ideas merges effective, research-based approaches from two popular NSTA resources. One is the Uncovering Student Ideas in Science series by Page Keeley, which uses formative assessment probes to identify what children know-or think they know-about science. The other is the Instructional Sequence Matters series by Patrick Brown. It promotes active learning through the explore-before-explain sequence of instruction. This one-stop professional learning resource starts with a clear explanation of how to combine assessment probes with the explore-before-explain method. Then it tells how to plan activities so your young scientists will construct the accurate knowledge on which they can anchor their future learning. Finally, 11 model lessons provide a replicable instructional framework, Lesson titles range from "Marble Roll" to "Batteries, Bulbs, and Wires" to "What Is the Result of a Chemical Change?" If you're a beginning teacher, you can use the model lessons to build a repertoire of research-based strategies to use throughout your career. If you're an experienced teacher who values hands-on approaches but wishes your lessons had more impact, you'll benefit from learning the value of reorganizing your instruction. And if you're a teacher-educator, you can use the lessons to model best practices. Regardless of your experience level, Activating Students' Ideas is ideal to read, discuss, implement and dissect. You'll find that it promotes long-fasting understanding for your students and yourself., Science teachers face an incredible challenging task of combining research on how students learn best, the three-dimensions of the Science Education Frameworks that in themselves are complicated to understand, and instructional sequences that lead to deeper learning. Activating Students' Ideas Matter: Linking Formative Assessment Probes to Instructional Sequence is the type of book that stimulates teacher thinking and cultivates teachers' skills and abilities necessary to take students to higher levels of learning. The beginning chapter of the book, provides teacher candidates, experienced teachers, teacher educators, and professional developers with a framework for developing lessons that promote higher levels of science literacy. The framework that is used throughout the book is an explore-before-explain sequence of instruction using the 5E instructional model. Once teachers have a solid understanding of an explore-before-explain framework, we guide them through planning activities so they can use emerging bodies of research and the Science Education Frameworks to plan their own explore-before-explain lessons. Educators will have many opportunities to think about explore-before-explain teaching and can explore examples of K-5 science lessons. Each chapter addresses the three dimensions of the Frameworks.

Book was "nearly new" and "as described" in listing. The advertised price was fair and a good value. Unfortunately, the seller's shipping partner was very slow to get the book packaged and shipped. Shipping took too long, and the tracking info gave no reliable info on shipping date, time in transit or expected delivery. Seller did everything right, but their shipping partner needs improvement. I recommend this seller to other eBay buyers....... just make sure you're okay with the shipping terms.

The listing was for a hardcover version of this book; however, I received a paperback. The Seller replied quickly to my question about this issue and issued a full refund - and let me keep the book. So, a diligent Seller for sure - and well packaged and reasonable timing on shipping. Thank you for the refund, and as you suggested, I'll likely donate this volume and seek the hardcover.

This 2DVD set is in perfect condition. Cover art and case like new. Both DVDs played with no flaws. Description was listed as “Good”; I would describe it as “Very Good”, basically Like New. Delivery was super fast and packaging was excellent. The DVD case was wrapped well, then put in a cardboard envelope that was sturdy and hard to open (this is NOT a negative!). I have purchased from this company a few times and have always been very satisfied. Prices are great.
