Released in 2012, the WD My Passport is designed primarily for compatibility with desktop or laptop systems via the stable Microsoft New Technology File System (NTFS). This is the file format used by Windows 8 and other Microsoft operating systems. However, it can be easily reformatted to employ the Hierarchical File System (HFS+) format used for Mac. Through this process, Apple users can also enjoy the benefits provided by the device. As a 2.5-inch form factor external hard disk drive, the device is compact and easily transported. It measures 1 inch by 4 inches by 3 inches and weighs only 6.88 ounces. It employs perpendicular magnetic recording (PMR) technology to securely store information on spinning disks. The spindle speed rotates at a rate of 5400RPM. This 5400RPM rate ensures that read-and-write operations are rapid and responsive. Users can connect these drives to a computing system via the USB interface. This type of Passport HDD supports USB 2.0 and 3.0, and it draws power from the USB cable as well.
