Synopsis
In the spring of 2002, Dave Bidini set off for Nettuno, Italy, with his wife, Janet, and their two small children, in search of his favourite summer game, baseball. Nettuno was his destination because this town, south of Rome, has been the baseball capital of Italy since 1944, when the game was introduced by the American GIs who liberated the region. Bidini wanted to spend time in a town where everyone is as nuts about the game as he is, and in Nettuno, they love the game so much that they hand out baseball gloves and bats to children taking their first communion. For six months Bidini followed the fortunes of the Serie B Peones, Nettunese to the core. At the same time he was also learning about his own heritage, having spent his youth vigorously ignoring his Italianness. The result of his summer in Italy is vintage Bidini: a funny, perceptive, and engrossing book that takes readers far beyond the professional sport to the game that people around the world love to play., Summer is for lazing in the sun and watching baseball. Or, if you are Dave Bidini, it's for travelling to the country your ancestors came from, and watching baseball under the hot Italian sun. In the spring of 2002, Bidini set off for Nettuno, Italy, with his wife, Janet, and their two small children, in search of his favourite summer game. Nettuno was his destination because this town, south of Rome on the Tyrrhenian coast, has been the baseball capital of Italy since 1944, when the game was introduced by the American soldiers who liberated the region. Bidini wanted to spend time in a place where everyone is as nuts about the game as he is, and in Nettuno, they hand out baseball gloves and bats to children taking their first communion. The professional, Serie A, team in Nettuno is the Indians, but a severe case of the "wins" has turned it into a team stuffed with talent imported from Latin America. So for six months Bidini followed the fortunes of the Serie B Peones, Nettunese to the core. At the same time he was also learning about his own heritage, having spent his youth vigorously ignoring his Italianness. Baseballissimo is the glorious result of that summer in Italy. From Bidini's first comical attempts to speak Italian to his journeys with the team, readers will be caught up in the emotional roller-coaster of the Peones' season and in the escapades of Dave's family's life in Nettuno. Vintage Bidini, Baseballissimo is a funny and perceptive and compulsively readable book that takes readers, whether they are baseball fans or not, far beyond the professional sport to the game that people around the world love to play. Better watch out for FedEx this holiday season, already having issues. In my case no updating of tracking info on my package, so it's not looking good for Xmas deliveries. Anyway, everything just as described, extremely well packaged for the circuitous route traveled, got this kit at a decent price( even with tracking issue). Thx, DR
