About this product
Product Information
"Transformers," released for the PlayStation 2 in 2004, is based on the "Transformers Armada" television series, which premiered on the Cartoon Network in 2002. This PS2 game was developed by Melbourne House and published by Atari. Rather than directly adapt an episode of the show, this video game tells an original tale. Megatron has amassed a giant Decepticlone army, which he has used to conquer the planet of Cybertron. On Earth, the Mini-cons, a powerful breed of Transformer, appear again after an absence of over a million years. Optimus Prime and his heroic Autobots rush to earth to find them before the villainous Megatron can. Before starting the game, you can choose from three characters: Optimus Prime, Hot Shot, and Red Alert. Each of these characters has unique weapons that change how they play. For example, Optimus offers an up-close-and-personal experience while Red Alert favors long-range weaponry. As you'd expect from a Transformers game, each robot can transform into a vehicle. These vehicles can travel at much faster speeds than you can achieve by running. You'll need these vehicles since "Transformers" features expansive levels. You'll frequently find yourself traversing the entire width of a stage to hunt down the Mini-cons. In vehicle mode, you can also attack any foes in your path by ramming into them. Each Mini-con you find upgrades your robot and can boost your attack power or defense. When you're surrounded by enemies, you can perform the Powerlinx maneuver with your Mini-cons. This ability lets you slow down time and weave in and out of bullets as you shoot your opponents. You'll need all the help you can get, as this game is full of Decepticons. Your chosen Autobot will frequently find himself outgunned by 12 or more enemies at a time. At the end of each stage is a massive boss that will take up your entire screen. You'll deal with foes like Starscream, Tidal Wave, and Megatron in your adventure. At the end of your quest, you'll face off with the giant planet-eating monster himself, Unicron. When you need a break from the action, you can hunt for the many Easter egg collectibles that are available in this game. Each Data-con unlocks a unique piece of "Transformers" history. Some Data-cons unlock game artwork, including sketches and renderings. Others unlock Armada toy prototype photos, mini-comics, and instructions. Some even unlock special clips straight from the original '80s cartoon. It will take around 10 hours to beat the story mode, but players who want to find everything can expect to put in at least 20 hours. This PS2 title used a proprietary graphics engine not seen on other PlayStation games. The soundtrack was produced by Gavin Parker. It features both remixed music from the series and original music just for this title. "Transformers" for the Sony PlayStation 2 has a rating of T for teen. If you're looking for an action-packed title that will keep you on the edge of your seat, you'll love this game.
