Arrived this morning... I'm not at all sure about your hypothetical descriptions and imaginings - this is a relic from the heady psychedelic days of the 1970's. It is made from a faux-carnelian (plastic) and has more to do with the psycho-spiritual awakening of those times than the 'Grand Tour'. Anyway, it is an extremely rare bit of 'hippie stuff' of which very little has survived, so thank you.
