Recorded at Make Believe Ballroom, West Shokan, New York, February 1997. Includes liner notes by Bill Milkowski and Norm Waitt Jr. Although drummer Bill Bruford is best known for his tenure in British prog-rock bands like Yes and King Crimson, his roots stem from traditional jazz. On IF SUMMER HAD ITS GHOSTS, Bruford teams with Eddie Gomez and Ralph Towner to produce music that is the closest yet to the sounds that inspired him in his youth. Of course, this is not traditional jazz per se, but more a gentler acoustic version of the modern European instrumental fusion that Bruford has expertly produced for many years with his band Earthworks. GHOSTS comes closest to the ECM style of jazz than anything else, but with a slightly less New Age tint thanks to Bruford's always-imaginative drumming. The British drummer and renowned American bassist Gomez mesh surprisingly well given their disparate backgrounds. The third element is, of course, Towner, an acoustic guitarist of considerable magnitude who gives the session as much atmosphere as melody. In addition, the compositions here are first rate Most come from Bruford's pen, each exploring a particular mood with often more subtlety than bombast. In the end the listener is left with a greater picture of this master drummer who continues to explore his own enigmatic path.
