Reviews
This book is an exemplary text ... the reproduction of the three different prayer books is immaculate, and the introductory commentary is original and thought provoking., Everything has been planned and executed faultlessly, from the massive undertaking of the editions themselves (for which Cummings consulted hundreds of copies of the Book of Common Prayer), right down to the details, like the glossary, and the enriching features, like the note on music. The result is a book that is at once accessible to a lay reader with little knowledge of the history of the Book of Common Prayer and stimulating to academics working in the fields of church history, book history,, "Magnificent edition" -- Diarmaid MacCulloch,London Review of Books "Superb edition...excellent notes and introduction" -- Rowan Williams,Times Literary Supplement, "Magnificent edition" -- Diarmaid MacCulloch, London Review of Books "Superb edition...excellent notes and introduction" -- Rowan Williams, Times Literary Supplement, "[I]f this edition makes the prayer book texts available to--and appreciated by--more general readers, it will have served its admirable purpose." -- Catholic Historical Review "Magnificent edition" --Diarmaid MacCulloch, London Review of Books "Superb edition...excellent notes and introduction" --Rowan Williams, Times Literary Supplement, "[I]f this edition makes the prayer book texts available to--and appreciated by--more general readers, it will have served its admirable purpose." -- Catholic Historical Review"Magnificent edition" --Diarmaid MacCulloch, London Review of Books"Superb edition...excellent notes and introduction" --Rowan Williams, Times Literary Supplement, "Cummings' annotations are superb and very much worth reading in full. He desribes with patience and scholarly tact the many subtleties of variation among these editions and the reasons for them. His achievement is all the more impressive because these subtleties often seem boundless...Cummings's authoritative edition helps readers understand how a politically fraught, theologically disputatious era managed to produce such a masterpiece--insofar as such a miracle can be understood at all."--Books and Culture "Cummings, whose previous book was the brilliant and groundbreakingLiterary Culture of the Reformation, is a scholar exquisitely sensitive to the intricacies of grammar and linguistics. Here--in his lapidary introduction, comprehensive glossary, rich explanatory notes, and meticulous, plainly written annotations--he elucidates the doctrinal, social, political, historical, and literary reverbations of a monumentally significant work."--The Atlantic

Synopsis
'In the midst of life we are in death.' The words of the Book of Common Prayer have permeated deep into the English language all over the world. For nearly 500 years, and for countless people, it has provided a background fanfare for a marriage or a funeral march at a burial. Yet this familiarity also hides a violent and controversial history. When it was first produced the Book of Common Prayer provoked riots and rebellion, and it was banned before being translated into a host of global languages and adopted as the basis for worship in the USA and elsewhere to the present day. This edition presents the work in three different states: the first edition of 1549, which brought the Reformation into people's homes; the Elizabethan prayer book of 1559, familiar to Shakespeare and Milton; and the edition of 1662, which embodies the religious temper of the nation down to modern times. About the Series: For over 100 years Oxford World's Classics has made available the broadest spectrum of literature from around the globe. Each affordable volume reflects Oxford's commitment to scholarship, providing the most accurate text plus a wealth of other valuable features, including expert introductions by leading authorities, voluminous notes to clarify the text, up-to-date bibliographies for further study, and much more., 'In the midst of life we are in death'The words of the Book of Common Prayer have permeated deep into the English language all over the world. The Angkor book arrived finally, and is indeed beautiful. Thank you. The USPS tracking system is woefully inadequate. Tracking at one point indicated early delivery, which would have been great as this was a birthday present, but then got hung up at one facility for MANY days before moving onward to the destination. Arriving after the birthday. Tracking should NOT post an early arrival date and then have the package sit in limbo for days. DeJoy is killing the postal system.
