Synopsis
Into this strangely stark, yet beautiful landscape? into the rough and wild currents of history, walked this man, William Wallace Bass. In this moment, looking back at who he was and the historic figure he would become, this is where his dance with destiny would begin. This wild America: Here, he pitched his tents. Here was his jump-off down these rugged, undefined paths, trod for centuries by Native Americans. Here, he would blaze his own trail into Grand Canyon lore and would build his life among the tiered halls. Bass entertained and guided many famous guests to his camps, including authors Zane Grey and George Wharton James, newspaper mogul, William Randolph Hearst, father of the Sierra Club, John Muir, Canyon pioneer, John Hance, ?The Poet Scout,? Captain Jack Crawford, and baron of industry, Henry Ford. He also introduced the likes of movies stars Mary Pickford, Douglas Fairbanks and cowboy star, Tom Mix, to the grandeur of the Grand Canyon. W.W. would forge a life of his choosing. I really don't think he was looking into the future, our future. Did Bass think about the inheritance in place, deeds, and history that he would leave us? Seriously, I doubt it but we, as his family, were gifted with it, just the same.
