About this product

Product Information

Author Neil D. Bramwell examines the life of the eleventh president, James K. Polk. As president, Polk set three major goals for his administration, all of which he managed to achieve by the end of his term. First, he lowered the tariff to a level that appealed to both the urban north and rural south. Then he established an independent treasury, and later added almost one million square miles of territory to the United States as a result of the controversial Mexican War.

Reviews
In November 2000 the Wall Street Journal published the results of a survey conducted to determine the relative capabilities of American presidents. One hundred and thirty two eminent historians were queried and asked to rank the various American chief executives. Rated number ten, and described as "Near Great" was the twelfth president, James K. Polk. Born in North Carolina and raised in Tennessee, James K. Polk did not even begin to attend school until he was eighteen-years-old. Polk became a lawyer and also entered into state politics. Defeated as a gubernatorial candidate, Polk's political career appeared to be a dead-end affair. However, in 1844, Polk became both a surprise democratic nominee for the presidency and then a "dark horse" victor in the election. As president, Polk oversaw the national victory in the Mexican War. He assisted in the annexation of Texas and the vast western territories ceded to America by the Mexican Government. Polk also established a stronger central government and strove to strengthen the powers of the presidency. Polk was not reelected in 1848 and died only three months after leaving office. These, and many other engaging facts about a relatively unknown, but effective leader, are presented in this illustrated biography. The author of this chapter in the "MyReportLinks.com Presidents" series does a fine job of describing the happenings of both James K. Polk's life and his political efforts. The narrative is fast-paced and laced with anecdotes that help amplify this previous national leader. Also included are multiple Internet research sites that will further assist readers., Children's Literature
