Jane Austen escribió el primer borrador de este libro entre 1798 y 1799 y, de hecho, fue la primera novela que intentó publicar. Sin embargo, por diversos motivos, recié n fue editada de forma pó stuma en 1818. El argumento gira en torno a Catherine Morland, una joven franca, ingenua, sencilla e imaginativa, de diecisiete añ os, que vive con su familia en un pequeñ o pueblo y que es invitada, primero por sus vecinos, el matrimonio Allen, a visitar Bath con ellos y luego por una familia con la que toma contacto en el balneario, los Tilney, a pasar una temporada en la abadí a que da tí tulo a la obra. Todo ello le permitirá a la muchacha incursionar en sociedad, conocer ambientes má s sofisticados que el de su hogar, abrirse al mundo, hacer amigas y conocer el amor. Má s allá del devenir de la historia en sí y de las peripecias que relata La abadí a de Northanger, hay otros niveles textuales a descubrir que resultan por demá s interesantes y que se abren como puertas a partir de la gran afició n que muestra la protagonista por la lectura de las novelas gó ticas que estaban tan en boga en la é poca. De alguna forma, la joven está tan intoxicada de estas novelas como, en su momento, lo estuvo el Quijote con las de caballerí a, y tambié n en ella la lectura modifica su percepció n de la realidad circundante. Por todo ello, estamos frente a un texto eminentemente literario pero que, en otro nivel menos obvio y má s lateral, habla y comenta la literatura de su é poca. Una novela que defiende a las novelas. Y, por supuesto, tambié n a sus heroí nas.
