In 2003 Who guitarist Pete Townshend returned to his ambitious rock opera from 1969, "Tommy," and gave it a complete overhaul. The audio tweaking by Townshend more than matches the breadth of his original vision, and finally presents the album in a format befitting his grandiose dreams. The story of the album follows Tommy, a kid who witnesses the shooting of his stepfather by his real father, and subsequently turns deaf, dumb, and blind. Stand alone Who classics proliferate throughout, including "Pinball Wizard," "I'm Free," and "We're Not Gonna Take It," as well as a variety of instrumentals and solo turns from various band members. As a cohesive whole the record gells splendidly, offering a fascinating insight into the talent of Townsend as a writer and executer of ambitious ideas.
