Synopsis
This 2004 book explores how China's leaders have embraced globalization and market-oriented modernization. While they have been open to Western ideas in rebuilding the economic system, they have been reluctant to import Western concepts of democracy. The author argues that this selectivity will impede China's progress in becoming a modern nation state., Globalization has created challenges and opportunities which all countries have to grapple with. Yongnian Zheng explores how China's leaders have embraced global capitalism and market-oriented modernization by encouraging individual enterprise and the reform of economic institutions. While open to importing Western ideas in rebuilding the economic system, the same leaders have been reluctant to import Western concepts of democracy and the rule of law. Zheng argues that, ultimately, this selectivity will impede China's progress in becoming a modern nation state., Globalization has thrown up challenges and opportunities which all countries have to grapple with. In his 2004 book, Yongnian Zheng explores how China's leaders have embraced global capitalism and market-oriented modernization. He shows that with reform measures properly implemented, the nation-state can not only survive globalization, but can actually be revitalized through outside influence. To adapt to the globalized age, Chinese leaders have encouraged individual enterprise and the development of the entrepreneurial class. The state bureaucratic system and other important economic institutions have been restructured to accommodate a globalized market economy. In rebuilding the economic system in this way, Zheng observes that Chinese leaders have been open to the importation of Western ideas. By contrast, the same leaders are reluctant to import Western concepts of democracy and the rule of law. The author argues that, ultimately, this selectivity will impede China's progress in becoming a modern nation state., As China develops its economy, author argues it will be held back by its refusal to import democratic values.

- 0***t (10)- Feedback left by buyer.Past 6 monthsVerified purchaseItem was exactly as described and packaged to protect it. Seller’s pricing was spot on and when I received it, it was in good condition. Seller actually messaged me when they shipped it (I really appreciated that). Overall I’m happy doing business with them!
- r***m (85)- Feedback left by buyer.Past monthVerified purchaseVery good customer service. Postage was very quick. Unfortunately the packaging wasn't enough to protect the item from a heavy blow and it arrived damaged, but zuber was responsive to the situation. Obviously I'd prefer if nothing had gone wrong, but the real test of customer service is how someone responds when things DO go wrong, and I've got nothing but praise for Katie's communication with me.
