He feels invigorated leaving home for the first time to join the Navy and train as a technical aircraft maintenance specialist. Initial postings with Navy aircraft operations fail to fulfill their promise of engagement in naval warfare and exercising his discipline. Efforts to rectify the situation although approved are confounded by events and errors. Eventually his attempts to see real action lead to involvement in the battle for Iwo Jima and the horrors of endless air raids and kamikaze attacks during the Okinawa campaign. Vivid descriptions of active duty in seaplane patrol squadrons during naval air operations at Iwo Jima and Okinawa are both enlightening and historically significant. The book chronicles the life of the boy who entered the war to the man who emerged, seasoned by his experience in finding his way through unusual unforeseen circumstances.
