A note of explanation: GLENN GOULD PLAYS BACH constitutes not a single documentary but actually a series of three documentaries, made in 1981 by the French filmmaker Bruno Monsaingeon. Monsaingeon seized upon the opportunity to film the eccentric, brilliant Gould - arguably the greatest Canadian concert pianist of all time - during Gould's studio recordings of the Goldberg Variations, just one year prior to his death. The entire trilogy appears in this box set. Episodes include THE QUESTION OF INSTRUMENT, AN ART OF THE FUGUE and THE GOLDBERG VARIATIONS; the Bach pieces that Gould performs include Fugue No. 9 in E Major BWV 878, BWV 988 'The Goldberg Variations' and Partita No. 4 in D Major BWV 828.
