About this product
Product Information
Phalanx is a space shooter video game developed by Zoom Inc in 1991. The game was a hit on the Super Nintendo Entertainment System and the Game Boy Advance. The vintage game was known for its box art, which depicted an elderly, bearded man playing a banjo with spaceships flying around behind him. The game takes place in the year 2279, when a planetary research project is sent into space. A group of researchers partly colonizes an alien planet called Delia, but after their stay, an emergency transmission is sent from the planet to the security force orbiting Delia. The planet’s fighters were possessed by an unknown squadron of alien bioships that are a hostile threat. The player becomes Wink Baulfield, a pilot sent to investigate what happened to the group on Delia. The assignment is called Operation Climax, with the space fighter A/144 Phalanx. It was a hit in 1991 and is still highly sought after by collectors. The Phalanx can switch to three different speeds, allowing the player to weave between bullets, go fast, or go slow. The ship can also take multiple hits before losing a life, which was unheard of in a shooting game at that time. A variety of weapons could be chosen from things that the enemies left behind. The player could switch between weapons freely, always with another in the background waiting to switch. Weapons and items included lasers, homing, energizer, ricochet, three types of missiles, and a healing power capsule that would upgrade weapons as well as provide one point of ship health. The game was developed by Zoom Inc, which was founded in 1988 in Japan. The company began by producing titles for the Sharp X68000 system. In 1993 Zoom established a joint venture with Imagineer. Some of the other well-known titles from Zoom Inc include Genocide, Lagoon, Overtake, Zero Divide, Mister Mosquito, and Fantastic Cube. Kemco was one of the original licensees for Nintendo and manufactured games for the company. Some of their best known franchises include Top Gear, MacVenture, Spy vs Spy, Desert Commander, Rocket Ranger, First Samurai, The Blues Brothers, Catwoman, Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker, Crazy Chase, Chicago Enforcer, and Mystic Chronicles. There have been many that have called Phalanx one of the most difficult games ever made. The game rivaled other games on the Sega Genesis system and was made exclusively for Nintendo 64 and Super Nintendo. Other consoles that can benefit from Phalanx include XBox, Playstation, and Dreamcast.
