The ever-expanding world of LEGO video games leaves the realm of licensed property (Star Wars, Batman, Harry Potter) to create its own mythology in the persistent world online RPG LEGO Universe. Set in an alternate dimension populated by miniature LEGO characters, LEGO Universe lets gamers join the struggle for imagination taking place between the good Nexus Force and the malevolent Maelstrom. Players begin by customizing their character and creating a unique spaceship in order to travel between many different worlds, while the gameplay takes a variety of forms, including basic combat and brick collecting, races, pet training, shooting competitions, and of course, building. Every player is given a piece of property where they can rapidly create predetermined items in the "Quick Building" mode, choose from collections of bricks to make full models in "Modular Building" mode, or design entirely new creations in the "Custom Building" mode. Characters don't gain experience points or level up in LEGO Universe, but instead become more powerful and skilled through the acquisition of new items and weapons. The game allows players to participate in both PvP and PvE competitions, and friends can chat with one another, trade items and coins, and form teams to go on co-op quests.
