Synopsis
Growing up as a French-speaking Cajun on a south Louisiana sharecropper's farm in the 1940s and '50s, Floyd Sonnier dreamed of becoming a professional artist. He was but six or seven years old when he did his first drawings, using small bits of charcoal gathered from under an iron kettle used in a boucherie the day before. With unbridled enthusiasm, the fledgling artist drew on every surface he could find: the sides of the barn, the bricks of the fireplace, even the wallpaper in his parents' bedroom. He won art contests as a youngster, graduated in commercial art from the University of Southwestern Louisiana, and continued on his journey to artistic excellence. This book takes you on that journey, describing his path to success as an artist and providing a detailed account of life on the farm. The combination of intimate first-person stories and detailed drawings of scenes from days gone by creates an insightful, refreshing new view of a colorful era in Louisiana history. Twenty-five years in the making, this bilingual, autobiographical book of art is also a testament to Floyd Sonnier's love for his Acadian, or Cajun, heritage and culture. Book jacket., This 190-page hardcover book is the autobiography of pen-and-ink artist Floyd Sonnier (1933-2002) of Lafayette, La. Written and illustrated by Mr. Sonnier, the book tells the story of growing up as a French-speaking Cajun in rural south Louisiana in the 1940s and '50s. It is also a testament to his love of his French-Acadian, or Cajun, culture and heritage.
