Synopsis
A fully illustrated guide to the two major Japanese carrier torpedo bombers of World War II, aircrafts that fought in all the major battles from Pearl Harbor to Okinawa., The Nakajima B5N 'Kate' was one of the finest torpedo-bombers of World War 2, helping Japan achieve success in the surprise attack on US military installations at and around Pearl Harbor, and serving at the battles of the Coral Sea, Midway and Santa Cruz. Later war versions of the 'Kate' were equipped with anti-shipping radar and performed anti-submarine warfare duties, while others continued to serve as bombers and trainers. The aircraft's replacement, the Nakajima B6N 'Jill', improved on its predecessor, but by the time it was deployed in combat the US Navy had already achieved aerial supremacy in the Pacific, meaning that the 'Jill' was never able to achieve its full potential in combat. Both aircraft would be relegated to a kamikaze role by the end of the war. Packed with first-hand accounts, action photography and specially commissioned artwork, this unique volume highlights the combat highs and lows of the Imperial Japanese Naval Air Force's premier torpedo-bombers, including their design and development. Book jacket., Entering service during the Sino-Japanese War, the Nakajima B5N (code-named "Kate") excelled and went on to achieve surprising and dramatic successes in the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. It also contributed to the sinking of the U.S. aircraft carriers USS Lexington at the Battle of the Coral Sea, USS Yorktown at the Battle of Midway, and USS Hornet at the Battle of the Santa Cruz Islands. Its replacement, the Nakajima B6N "Jill," while a marked improvement over its illustrious predecessor, was never able to achieve its full potential in combat due to advances in Allied aircraft, finding itself relegated to the dreaded Kamikaze strikes in the latter part of the war. Using previously unpublished photographs as well as color illustrations, this book will cover the history of the "Kate" and "Jill" torpedo/attack bombers, including their design and development, as well as the combat highs and lows of the Imperial Japanese Navy's premier torpedo bombers.
